About Commerce City, Colorado New Homes

This city was originally named Commerce Town in 1853. It was a meeting place of highway, railroad and airport travel. The area was a farming community with livestock, truck gardens, and wheat fields which prospered until the late 1920?s. During the 1930?s the Continental Oil Company and other oil refineries were established. In the 1970?s there was a decade of growth and improvement. Because Denver?s Airport Industrial Park was nearby, business boomed and the slogan "Crossroads of Colorado" was adopted. Home choices in downtown Commerce City vary markedly from those found in the recently annexed growth areas. The majority of over 4,000 homes were built prior to 1960.

Several developments on the northern edges of the city are carved out of farmland, offering a rural setting with large lots and occasional zoning for horses. There are town homes and single family homes.

It was the spring of 1959 that the Perl-Mack companies finalized plans for a large subdivision north of Denver in unincorporated Adams County. The plans for this new community included design of commercial, industrial recreational and school areas and was to be centered around a regional shopping complex.

Ground was broken in June of 1959 and the first show homes were opened on the northeast corner of what is now the intersection of Interstate 25 and 104th Avenue. This new development grew to 500 residents by 1960 and received national recognition in Life, Look, McCalls, Good House Keeping and House and Home magazines. The regional shopping center planned for this new community opened in 1968 and was called Northglenn Mall.
