There are several versions of how Universal City was named. One story relates to the filming of "West Point of the Air Force." Universal Studios, the filmmaker, established a supply and living base just outside the gates of Randolph Air Force Base. It became a common practice to identify that area as ?Universal City; as the filming progressed. The second version takes place during the early days of World War II when pilot trainees were present for training from all over the world. The pilot trainees established their quarters outside the entrance of Randolph Air Force Base. As discussion among the trainees soon discovered, the area outside of the gates of Randolph had people from all around the world or ?universe,? and it truly was a ?universal city.? Take your pick!

In 1960, Universal City was incorporated providing a governmental structure for a community made up of relatively new subdivisions and the area had reached a population of 1,800 and an incorporated area of approximately 624 acres.
