Westlake and the surrounding area was settled by Charles and Matilda Medlin who arrived in the area with about 20 other families in 1847. Originally, they settled along Denton Creek but moved to higher ground to the south after weathering ferocious floods along the creek. One of the historic landmarks was the three story Medlin barn which was estimated to be about 130 years before its removal in 1997 due to safety issues.
