The City of Kirby is a small community located adjacent to the Northeast San Antonio area. The city came into existence in 1917 as a loading zone for cotton and corn on the Southern Pacific Railroad and has evolved into a farm-to-market and residential community. Eleven families lived in Kirby in 1927. Cotton and corn grown in the area spurred the city's growth, which soon saw a meat market, cotton gin, corn cellar, feed lot and a local school. Kirby's dirt roads were much traveled during the early years. Old Seguin Road, or F.M. 78, was the major thoroughfare from the region to Houston and the Texas coast. A volunteer fire department was added to the city in 1955, and the population had reached 550. Those citizens voted to incorporate in that same year.
