SOUTH BALDWIN COUNTY, ALABAMA or COASTAL ALABAMA

South Baldwin County (or, Coastal), Alabama, is made up of many unique communities. Its residents often call it, ?The best kept secret in the world,? since most people don?t even know that Alabama has a coast, much less an area of such matchless beauty and peaceful surroundings. Where else can you find a piece of paradise with everything to offer except cold weather & snow?

The beautiful Gulf of Mexico with its sugar white sands is the South Boundary of South Baldwin County. On the West Side is historic Mobile Bay. The Florida Border nestles on the East, separated from Alabama by the picturesque Perdido Bay. (Perdido means hidden, and the Bay was a favorite of pirates, in bygone days, since the entrance is not visable from the Gulf.) South Baldwin?s Northern Border is I-10, the artery that connects Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida.

No matter if your heart desires a quiet place to live, world class recreational opportunities, beautiful surroundings, excellent schools, enviable medical facilities, marvelous shopping, or most anything else you dream of, South Baldwin County, Alabama, has it all!

There are many challenging golf courses in the area. If you like to swim or fish, you?ll find the Gulf, lakes, bayous, bays, and rivers galore. Shopping is your love? Take your pick from quaint boutiques, book stores, antique shops, an outlet mall with over 130 stores, or you may choose from any number of other enticing places to indulge your tastes. Festivals and all sorts of interesting events will entertain you all through the year. The list of things to do in South Baldwin County, Alabama, goes on and on.

GULF SHORES & ORANGE BEACH combine to make, ?Pleasure Island.? Whether you plan to live here or visit here, you will find there is something rare and magical about Alabama?s Gulf Coast. No matter what you enjoy doing you are sure to find it here. Pleasure Island features 32 miles of lovely white sand beaches and sparkling blue water. Pleasure Island has all the expected good features of any small town, but added to that are supurb restaurants, endless reacreational facilities (including a zoo), and the friendliest people you will ever hope to meet.

FT. MORGAN makes up the West peninsula of Pleasure Island. There you?ll find historic Ft. Morgan (complete with a car ferry across Mobile Bay), beautiful beaches, charter boats, golf courses, and wonderful places to stay.

FOLEY is a few miles North of Pleasure Island. Shop ?til you drop at the huge outlet mall, wander through one of the hundreds of antique dealers, have a soda at an old time drug store, or perhaps you?d like to attend one of the churches there. There are many little shops for you to browse, and Foley also has a modern hospital.

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS is an easy drive West of Foley. The Magnolia River boasts the last water mail route in the country. The mailman travels by boat, and puts mail into mailboxes on docks along his route. An old store there has been renovated, and attached to that is a unique restaurant.

BON SECOUR, which means ?Safe Harbor,? loosely translated, was the original settlement on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. Swift School dates back to 1920, and it is rumored that the school hosts friendly ghosts of children and others. There you?ll find a sleepy fishing village with lovely old trees covered in moss, and quite a few of the antibellum houses tucked here and there. A small marina and restaurant on the Bon Secour River draw locals and visitors all year round.

ELBERTA was settled by mostly Germans who came from the Black Forest Region. You?ll see several old homes there with the old world heritage peeking out in their steep roof lines. Known far & wide for their German Sausage, they host several festivals each year that draw people from all over.

LILLIAN lies East of Elberta, snuggled up to Perdido Bay. It?s proximity to Pensacola, FL, is a big draw to people who want to live in this area, in addition to many desirable facilities that make for easy living.

SUMMERDALE just North of Foley. In addition to lovely homes and churches, you?ll find a large flea market with wonderful bargains.

ROBERTSDALE is next. It?s often called, The Hub City,? because it is centered in the South Baldwin County Area. The stock yard is here, with its Monday cattle sale. Like the other towns in the area, lush crops are everywhere you look. You?ll see many fields that continue to produce twelve months a year.

LOXLEY is found adjacent to Interstate 10. It hosts the Strawberry Festival each year, and you?ll find colorful fields of strawberries all around South Baldwin County. Fresh produce is offered by several open air markets. Loxley also offers banks and other amenities of small town living with the beaches close by. and it?s close to the larger areas of Mobile, AL, and Pensacola, FL.

SILVERHILL, between Robertsdale & Fairhope, has roots put down by the many Polish People who settled in the area. One special feature is the public library. Built in the late 1890?s, it houses a large collection of books, in addition to a museum of unique historic data.

POINT CLEAR, FAIRHOPE, MONTROSE, & DAPHNE make up, ?The Eastern Shore.? Once considered by Mobilians as a playground for the rich, it still maintains lovely old neighborhoods on Mobile Bay, but the permanent residents have made the area their own. The Eastern Shore is host to the phenomenon of, ?JUBILEE!? Residents on the Bay know that at certain times of the year, in the warm weather, fish, shrimp, and other creatures from the Bay simply try to climb out of the Bay and on to the shore, where they are scooped up by folks with buckets and nets.

Home to many artists, this area offers more in the manner of urban living than its more rural cousins. The Eastern Shore abounds with most amenities you can imagine.

SPANISH FORT is Daphne?s neighbor, just North of I-65. It is home to the site of the last major battle of the Civil War, located at historic Blakeley State park, where visitors will enjoy nature trails, bike and horse paths and camping.
